East meets West Litany of Saints 4-6-2017 and 4-19-2017

Today is a ferial day in the 5th week of Great Lent, Thursday, April 6th, A.D. 2017 according to the Gregorian Calendar used by the Roman Catholic Christian Church.

Today is Bright Wednesday during Bright Week of Great Lent, Wednesday, April 19th, A.D. 2017 according to the Julian Calendar used by a majority of Eastern/Oriental/Assyrian Orthodox/Catholic Christian Churches.

Today I will first list all of the Saints and commemorations of the day for Western Christians.  Next I will list all the Saints and commemorations of the day for Eastern Christians.  Finally, I will list Saints and commemorations held in common today by both Western and Eastern Christianity.

Note when I say Western Christianity, I mean the Roman Catholic Christian Church.  When I say Eastern Christianity, I mean the 23 Eastern Catholic Christian Churches in full communion with the Holy See of Rome, all of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Christian Churches, all of the Oriental Orthodox Catholic Christian Churches (though I may miss some of their saints and commemorations as well as the Assyrians because I'm using an Eastern Orthodox source for my Eastern commemorations), and both of the Assyrian Catholic Churches - the Assyrian Church of the East - officially the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, and the Ancient Church of the East - officially the Ancient Holy Apostolic Catholic Church of the East.

I do not include in these Churches groups such as Old Believer Russian Orthodox, Old Calendarists who are not in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Polish National Catholics, Society of Saint Pius X, Society of St. Josaphat,  the dozens of non canonical orthodox churches, the dozens of schismatic catholic churches, or any non canonical, schismatical group.

The reason I only include the canonical Catholic Christian Church (the Roman Catholic Church and the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches), and the canonical Eastern/Oriental/Assyrian Orthodox/Catholic Christian Churches is because according to Catholic dogma, these canonical bodies, though lacking full communion with Rome (except for the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion), they are all in possession of valid and grace filled Sacraments due to valid Apostolic Succession.

You would have to study Catholic Canon Law and the Magisterial Documents authored by the Holy Spirit and the Church Fathers of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council to understand this situation fully.  Technically, the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Christian Churches are the closest to full Communion with Rome than any other Eastern Church - they possess valid Sacraments and Apostolic Succession and have 100% orthodox Catholic belief.  The issue is the fact that technically they are illictly celebrating the Sacraments because they are severed from the Head of the Church, the See of Rome, and St. Peter the Prince of the Apostles.

I won't go into much more detail, but all these canonical Eastern Churches are grace filled Churches, and in my opinion, are dear brothers and sisters in Christ even if their canonical status is irregular - that is between Christ, the individual members of these Churches, and the Patriarchs and Primates of these Churches to hammer out and judge - not a lowly layman like myself.

Now, I do not include in Western Christianity any other body besides the Roman Catholic Church simply because the Roman Church is the only Western Christian Church with valid Sacraments and Apostolic Succession.  Certain Anglican, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian Protestant Christian Churches, while having valid baptism and so being members of the body of Christ, lack the authority to confer the Sacraments and so I do not count them amongst the ancient Churches.

The Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic Churches, the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox and Assyrian Catholic Churches can all trace their Apostolic succession, their doctrines, their communities, all the way back to the time of the Apostles and Jesus.

The schismatic and noncanonical catholic/orthodox churches cannot do that because they can only go as far back as to when they broke away from the Apostolic Church which they originated from.  For example - the "Association of Croatian Orthodox Believers", who call themselves "the Croatian Orthodox Church", can only trace there lineage back to September of 2010.  Hence they are not an Apostolic Church, they do not have valid Sacraments, they do not have a valid Priesthood, and they may or may not have a valid baptism (they likely do, though I'm not familiar enough with the group to judge).

Likewise, in Western Christianity, no Protestant Christian Community can trace its lineage back any further than the 12th century of Christ at the very earliest, and the most ancient Protestant Community still in existence traces its origins to the mid 15th century - this is the Moravian Church, which originated in the year 1457 in Bohemia (modern Czech Republic) and were followers of Jan Hus and Petr Chelcicky.

Similarly, other Protestant Communities can trace their roots back to the 16th century and Martin Luther - Lutheran Protestant Christian Communities.  Certain Anabaptists and Calvinists can trace their lineage back to the 16th century to men such as Huldrych Zwingli or John Calvin.  The English Reformation and the Church of England, the Anglican and Episcopal Churches, some of which are the closest to legitimate Western Catholic Christian Churches in existence, trace their lineage back to 16th century England and King Henry VIII. They had splits that led to groups like the Lollards and Puritants, etc.

Continuing on through the centuries, we have the Congregationalists springing into existence in 1592 and founded by Robert Browne, and later the Unitarians who split from them near the end of the 18th century.  The mid 16th century reformer John Knox and the founding of Presbyterian churches with the Church of Scotland.  Other churches like the Baptists and Methodists with John Wesley and so many more, too many to list in even 1000 pages, were rooted in this time as well.

Leaving the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries behind, we arrive in America in the 18th century.  The "first great awakening" was a religious revival that swept across the American colonies in the 1730s and 40s, forever impacting American Christianity.  Out of this grew the Quakers and the Shakers, the Pilgrims and the Puritans of the New World.

Moving into the 19th century, we have modern "prophets" arising and founding even more sects - leading to the Millerites and the "great disappointment" when the false prophet William Miller convinced thousands of people to give up all their possessions because Jesus was going to return to earth on March 21st, 1844.  When March 21st 1844 came and went, chaos ensued.  Some people lost their faith.  Some rioted.  It is suspected even some suicides and murders were influenced by this disaster.

Henry Emmons, one of the Millerites, wrote thus "I waited all Tuesday [October 22] and dear Jesus did not come;– I waited all the forenoon of Wednesday, and was well in body as I ever was, but after 12 o’clock I began to feel faint, and before dark I needed someone to help me up to my chamber, as my natural strength was leaving me very fast, and I lay prostrate for 2 days without any pain– sick with disappointment"

Out of this movement came another false prophet, Ellen G White, an epileptic who claimed visions of Jesus and heaven and claimed that the Catholic Church was the antichrist, that Sunday worship was satanic, and all sorts of ludacris heretical doctrines which the Seventh Day Adventists still believe today.

Other false prophets arose in the 19th century who's heresies are still being felt around the world today as well.  Joseph Smith was a con artist, a charlatan, a womanizing pervert and false prophet.  Over 10 million people are hypnotized by his demonic heresy and the various Mormon/ Latter Day "saint" organizations.

And coming to our current days, Baptists and Pentecostals gave rise to Fundamentalist American Protestants, "Bible only" and "non denominational" Christians, and all sorts of other sects.
This is how we ended up with over 30,000 contradictory sects in Western Christianity.  This is the rotten fruit of disobedience to the Apostolic See of St. Peter.  This is scandal which causes the world to look at Christendom and say "Christianity can't possibly be true, which one of the 30,000 churches and 10,000 preachers and 5,000 false prophets who are all preaching contradictory messages are teaching the truth?"

Anyways, today is my 5 year wedding anniversary with my wife and I have to get ready in a few minutes, so after that long interlude and half cocked history lesson, let's get on with our Litany of Western and Eastern Christian Saints.

East meets West Saints for the Day

It's been a while since I entered an entry for my East meets West blog posts.

Today is an optional memorial for St. Vincent Ferrer as well as being Wednesday April 5th, A.D. 2017 in the 5th Week of Great Lent in the Gregorian Calendar and Roman Catholic Church.

Today is also Bright Tuesday during Bright Week, Tuesday April 18th, A.D. 2017 in the Julian Calendar used by many Eastern/Oriental/Assyrian Orthodox Catholic Christians.

For this Litany, I will alternate and ask for the intercession of one Saint from the West and then one Saint from the East.   Saints and Martyrs who are pre-Schism (the worst event to ever occur to Christendom since the Crucifixion of Jesus - A.D. 1054) and are celebrated by both the Roman and Eastern Christian Churches today will be listed last.

This picture moved me to tears.  Our Great Holy Father Pope Francis, the Successor of St. Peter and servant of the Servants of God, the Primus Inter Pares (first among equals [of Bishops]) of the Roman Catholic Christian Church, embraces His Most Divine All-Holiness the Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, our Great Lord and Father Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Primus Inter Pares of the Great and Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic Christian Churches and the Successor of St. Andrew.  Sts. Peter and Andrew, pray for us!

So for the Litany to begin:

Roman Catholic Christian Saint Vincent Ferrer, pray for us!

Eastern Orthodox Catholic Christian Saints and Blessed martyrs and Fathers of the St. David-Gareji Monastery, pray for us!

We also commemorate today two holy and Wonderworking Icons of the Ever Virgin Theotokos, Mary most Holy!

The "Shuisky" icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Iveron Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, O Most Holy Theotokos, Save us!
The Shuisk-Smolensk Wonderworking Icon of the Mother of God was written in the years 1654-1655 in the Resurrection parish of the city of Shui, where at the time raged an unrelenting pestilence
The Iversk Icon of the Mother of God (which at present is preserved on Athos) was in the IX Century situated with a certain pious widow, living near Nicea. During the time of the emperor Theophilos (82-842), the Iconoclasts in their attempts to abolish the veneration of holy icons, came to the house of this Christian, and one of the soldiers struck the image of the Mother of God with a spear. Where it was struck, there immediately flowed out blood.
St. Albert of Montecorvino, pray for us!

St. Job, Patriarch of Moscow, pray for us!

St. Antonio Blasi, pray for us!

All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.  - the First Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, chapter XII, verses XI-XIII

Jesus lifted his eyes to heaven and prayed thus: I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine;   all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them.  And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

God bless you all, and thank  you for reading.

The smartest, wealthiest, most influential, most powerful, most famous people were all believers in God

The majority of the smartest people who ever lived do or have believed in God(s)
If you've ever attended a school or university, thank God for the Catholic Church

It's a common misconception amongst secularist/atheist types that all deists/theists are ignorant buffoons clinging to superstitious nonsense.  But the fact of the matter is, judging by IQ, the top 5 highest IQ's of people who have passed along with the 5 people alive with the highest IQ all have one thing in common - a belief in a God or gods.  This is not to say atheists are all stupid, rather this is to debunk the absurd claim that only an ignoramus could believe in God or religion.

1. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - widely regarded as one of the most brilliant minds of all time, Goethe is estimated to have had an IQ anywhere from 180 all the way up to 225.  Goethe was no atheist - he was born into a Lutheran Protestant Christian family, and never fully fell away from his faith.  By the end of his life, he believed Christianity the ultimate religion and passed from this earth with a very nuanced Judeo-Protestant theology.

2. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) - Einstein has become synonymous with intelligence, and with an IQ estimated to be between 160 - 205, it's no wonder.  Both Christians and atheists have unfairly used him to bolster their beliefs, for Einstein was neither an atheist nor a Christian.  Albert Einstein was raised in a culturally Jewish environment and attended a Catholic school in Munich.   Einstein had a great love for the person of Jesus, but never worshipped him or claimed to be religious.  Einstein didn't like to label himself, but I believe a fair label for him would be an "agnostic deist with Judeo-Christian sympathies".   Certainly no atheist - he emphatically denied he was an atheist and actually showed somewhat of a disdain for atheists.

3. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) - the great polymath with an estimated IQ of 180 - 220, and in my opinion the most brilliant mind to ever walk this earth (besides Jesus of Nazareth), was born and raised a devout Roman Catholic Christian.  He made sure to receive the Last Sacraments before dying.  In my opinion, he's a saint.  Saint Leonardo da Vinci, thou perspicacious sage, pray for us!

4. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) - Sir Newton is a well known genius.  He was also a devout Anglican Christian - although towards the end of his life, he fell into some heterodox beliefs, yet still clung fast to the Almighty.  An atheist he was not!   Sir Isaac had an estimated IQ of 190 - 200.

5. James Clark Maxwell (1831-1879) - James Clark was no idiot.  He was a genius with an IQ estimated between 190 - 205.  James Clark also was a devout Christian, though he switched between the Church of Scotland, a Protestant Presbyterian church and the Scottish Episcopal Protestant Christian church, he never doubted God or the faith.

6. Although I've already listed 5, I'll throw in a 6th in the smartest men from the past who believed God.  Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943) was yet another polymath and super genius.  His IQ has been estimated from 200 at least all the way to the highest possible IQ of 300.   He was born and raised in the Serbian Orthodox Catholic Christian Church by his Serbian Orthodox father, and he never renounced the faith.  He died still believing in God, if not actively practicing his faith.

So now that we've covered these men with high IQ's from the past who believed in God, and because time would not permit me to write about men like Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888, IQ of 190-205, the son of a Protestant Christian pastor and likely believer himself), Leonhard Euler (1707-1783, IQ of 180-200, who was a devout Christian with a firm belief in the inspiration of Scripture).

We also have all the ancient geniuses like Hypatia who lived from 360-415 and had an IQ between 170-210 (estimated of course) and certainly believed in gods, Socrates, Galileo, Copernicus, etc.  These ALL believed in God.  Not a single one of them was an atheist.  You'd be hard pressed to find a genius who was also an atheist before the "Enlightenment"  - but even after that, you see plenty of vastly intelligent men and women who believe in Deities.

Now onto the living, the living, yes the living.

1. Garry Kimovich Kasparov (1963 -) Kasparov is well known as a  Chess grandmaster.  He's also got an IQ of about 190 and is a "self appointed Christian".   No atheist here.

2. Christopher Michael Langan (1952-) Langan has a verified IQ of at least 195.  He is a well known theist and believes in God and an afterlife.

3. Andrew Magdy Kamal (1996 -) apart from being not even 21 years old yet, he may possibly have the highest verified IQ of all time - 231.  He belongs a Coptic Orthodox Christian Church group and is very much a devout believer in Jesus Christ.  He's also got "savant syndrome" - he "suffers" from Aspergers, ODD, and ADHD.  May God bless him!

4. Abdessellam Jelloul (currently alive, unsure DOB) Jelloul has apparently scored the highest IQ ever on an "advanced IQ test"  - 198.   This test included 13 dimensions of intelligence (analytical, spatial, logical, memory, musical, linguistic, philosophical,  moral, spiritual, interpersonal, intra personal, bodily, and naturalists.)  He is by no means an atheist.  He firmly believes in a God, the "Architect of the Universe."

5. Mislav Predavec -a genius with an IQ of 192 who is also a Christian.

There are many other highly intelligent people walking this earth - or who have walked this earth -  with firm beliefs in God - such as each and every one of our 45 Presidents of the United States (42 Protestant Christians - mostly Episcopal or Presbyterian - including our incumbent President, 2 pseudo Christian Deists - Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln,  and 1 Catholic Christian - JFK).

This next one goes without saying, but is worth mentioning since they have almost all been either incredibly shrewd and possibly genius - all 266 Roman Pontiff - our current holy Father Pope Francis and emeritus holy Father Pope Benedict XVI can speak nearly 30 languages between the two of them.

Let's not forget as well, that to become a Bishop in the Catholic Church one must have at least a Masters level degree and many have Doctorates.

So the next time someone tells you Christians or theists are stupid, remind them that the most powerful man on earth - the President of the United States - believes in God.

Remind them that the man who heads the most populous and ancient institution on Earth - the Pope - believes in God.

Remind them that the wealthiest people who have ever lived:  King Solomon estimated at possibly $1,000,000,000,000.00, Mansa Musa estimated at $400,000,000,000.00, and John D. Rockefeller at $340,000,000,000.00 were all devotees of the Most High God - King Solomon worshipped the God of Abraham, Mansa Musa worshiped the One God, and John Rockefeller worshipped God as a devout Protestant Christian.

Also, not just the wealthiest men of old believed in God.   The top three richest people on earth today are by no means atheist.  Bill Gates, worth $83,900,000,000.00 is a Roman Catholic Christian who sends his kids to Catholic schools.   Warren Buffet who is worth about $77,200,000,000.00 is no atheist - he is an agnostic who is not hostile towards God whatsoever.  Jeff Bezos worth about 73,100,000,000.00 and is a Christian and let's throw in for good measure Carlos Slim, a devout Maronite Catholic Christian worth over $50,000,000,000.00.

So we've covered the worlds most intelligent men were all theists of some sort, the worlds most powerful men were all theists of some sort, and the worlds richest men are all theists of sort.

Let's not forget fame.  The #1 most famous person of all time is none other than Jesus of Nazareth himself.  Coming in #2 is Napoleon, who was a Catholic Christian (though he did not quite live up to his Masters teachings...) and #3 would be Mohammed, the founder of Islam.
Father Georges Lemaitre, father of the Big Bang Theory

St. Albertus Magnus, pray for us!

Let's also not forget all the Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist scientists who bequeathed to us everything from mathematics to philosophy, charity to genetics, pasteurization to astrophysics, archaeology to paleontology, charities, universities and pharmacies ad infinitum!  Even the big bang was formulated by Catholic Priest Fr. George Lemaitre.  Charles Darwin, formulator of the scientific theory of evolution was a Christian who struggled with his faith due to his scientific discoveries and the incorrect scriptural exegetical methods which he believed, but he never totally lost faith or became an atheist.

So the next time an atheist claims religious people are stupid or have never contributed to the world, point him to this blog post illustrating that the smartest men, the richest men, the most powerful men, the most famous men, the men who laid the foundations for modern society - remind them they were nearly all religious, and God bless them!
