Catechetical Document on the worthy Reception of the Holy Eucharist

This is a small catechesis I put together on the subject of how to receive Communion in a worthy manner,

Who should, and who should not be receiving Holy Communion?

Dear brothers and sisters, I have noticed that a good amount of Catholics do not know the five requirements for admittance to the Lords Supper.  These Five prerequisites are each and every one to be met, and if any one is lacking, the virtuous and Catholic thing to do is to remain kneeling or seated during Communion and pray the Lord that you can receive worthily as soon as possible.  My sources for writing this catechetical document are the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Catholic Code of Canon Law, the writings of the Church Fathers and Popes, Sacred Scripture, and a great article by a blogger http://blog.adw.org/2015/06/on-the-worthy-reception-of-holy-communion/ So now without further ado, here is the list (Quotes from the Magisterium and Sacred Scriptures set off in italics):

#1)  Canon 912 Any baptized person not prohibited by law can and must be admitted to holy communion.
This canon is saying a Baptized Catholic can be admitted to Holy Communion.  If you are not a baptized Catholic, or unsure if your baptism is recognized by the Church, do not approach for Holy Communion.

#2)  You must be in a state of grace -
The Eucharist is not itself the sacrament of reconciliation, but in fact it presupposes that sacrament. It is the sacrament of the reconciled, to which the Lord invites all those who have become one with him; who certainly still remain weak sinners, but yet have given their hand to him and have become part of his family.
That is why, from the beginning, the Eucharist has been preceded by a discernment … (I Corinthians 11:27 ff). The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles [the Didache] is one of the oldest writings outside the New Testament, from the beginning of the Second Century[some scholars and my opinion is that it is from the first century, between A.D. 50-100], it takes up this apostolic tradition and has the priest, just before distributing the sacrament saying:”Whoever is holy, let him approach, whoever is not, let him do penance” (Didache 10). -Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI), Collected Works, Vol. II, Ignatius Press pp 273-274

"So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world." -(1 Cor. 11:27–32).
As Pope Benedict and St. Paul and the unanimous Tradition of Holy Mother Church points out, one must be in a state of grace to receive Communion, and the Church requires confession at least once per year.  So if it has been over a year since your last confession, or if you have committed a mortal sin since your last confession, please, do not approach for Communion, but stay kneeling and pray acts of contrition, otherwise you commit the sin of sacrilege by receiving unworthily.  As the Code of Canon Law states : "A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass [this applies to Priests, not laity] or to receive the Body of the Lord [this applies to laity] without prior sacramental confession unless a grave reason is present and there is no opportunity of confessing; in this case the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible" (Canon 916).

So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny (Mat 5:21-26).
Note the use of the simple word “first.” Jesus teaches that we cannot approach the altar if we are filled with hate or injustice toward our brethren. Reconciliation and the restoration of unity are required prior to approaching the Sacrament of Holy Communion, lest our “Amen” be incoherent or a lie -Quote from the referenced blog

Please, do NOT think people around you will judge you if you do not go forward. I guarantee, people will respect a penitent more than somebody taking the Body and Blood of Christ in a wanton manner. As the Didache states: "If any one is holy [i.e., in a state of sanctifying Grace], let him approach; if any one is not so, let him repent. Maranatha. Amen. … But let no one eat or drink of your Eucharist, unless they have been baptized into the name of the Lord; for concerning this also the Lord has said, “Give not that which is holy to the dogs” (Didache 10, 9).

To respond to this invitation we must prepare ourselves for so great and so holy a moment. St. Paul urges us to examine our conscience.  Those conscious of a grave sin must receive the sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to communion (Catechism # 1385).

And again from the Didache: "But first make confession of your faults, so that your sacrifice may be a pure one" (Didache 14).

This requirement can be dispensed of for several reasons, including: (1) there must be a grave reason to receive Communion (for example, danger of death), (2) it must be physically or morally impossible to go to confession first, (3) the person must already be in a state of grace through perfect contrition, and (4) he must resolve to go to confession as soon as possible.

If you want to call this communion “closed,” fine, but at its heart it is more positively called a “sacrum convivium,” a sacred meal of those who share a life together (con = with or together + vivium = life). This is not a “come one, come all” meal; it is a Holy Banquet for those who wear the wedding garment. The garment is righteousness and those who refuse to wear it are cast out (cf: Matt 22:11-12 & Rev 19:8). -Quote from the referenced blog

Many moderns surely would prefer a “no questions asked” invitation to all who wish to come. We moderns love this notion of unity. But to a large degree it is a contrived unity that overlooks truth (the opposite of which is falsehood, not just a different viewpoint). Yes, it overlooks the truth necessary for honest, real, and substantive unity. Such a notion of communion is shallow at best and a lie at worst. How can people approach the Eucharist, the sacrament of Holy Communion and unity, and say “Amen” when they differ with the Church over essentials such as that Baptism is necessary; that there are seven Sacraments; that the Pope is the successor of Peter and the Vicar of Christ on Earth; that homosexual acts, fornication, and adultery are gravely sinful; that women cannot be admitted to Holy Orders; that there is in fact a priesthood; that Scripture must be read in the light of the Magisterium; and on and on? Saying that there is communion in such a case is either a contrivance or a lie, but in either case, it does not suffice for the “Amen” that is required at the moment of reception of Holy Communion. -Quote from the referenced blog

#3) You must believe in the established Dogmas of the Church, especially the Eucharistic dogmas of the Real Presence of Jesus through Transubstantiation. "For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself" (1 Cor. 11:29). If you do not believe in the Real Presence, if you do not believe the Lords Words "my flesh is real food, my blood real drink", if you only believe in "symbolic presence" - do not approach! You must assent to the Catholic dogma or risk not discerning the Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus.

These are essential Dogmas. If you deny the Transubstantiation, you must repent and assent to Church Dogma before receiving. This is different from having doubts or feeling like you’re not really sure how the bread and wine completely change substance. This means outright denial of it. Saying “I have a hard time believing it, but I do believe, Lord I believe, help mine unbelief!”, is much different from “I do not believe it”. Many Bishops and Priests, even Popes and Saints have had a hard time understanding the Real Presence, sometimes even precipitating a Eucharistic Miracle (a la the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano) but they did not deny it, since this is such a great heavenly mystery
.
#4) You must have observed the minimum Eucharistic Fast: "One who is to receive the most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion" (CIC 919 §1). Elderly folks, people who are very ill, and their caretakers are excused from the Eucharistic fast (CIC 191 §3). Priests and deacons may not dispense one obligated by the Eucharistic fast unless the bishop has expressly granted such power to them (cf. CIC 89). Drinking water is allowed, and medicine that is necessary to take is allowed also. Don’t get scrupulous – I have seen people ask if brushing their teeth breaks the Eucharistic fast… it doesn't.  Also, this is a minimum.  There is nothing wrong and in fact it is encouraged to observe the older, stricter Eucharistic fast disciplines, of either 3 hours prior to reception which was instituted by Pope Pius XII, or the even older and Eastern tradition of fasting from midnight the night before (when receiving in the morning).

#5) You must not be under any sort of ban, censure, or excommunication. "Those who are excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion" (CIC 915).
In summary, in order to approach the Lords Table, you must be a baptized Catholic.  One must be in a state of grace, having made Sacramental Confession since your past mortal sin.  One must have a correct belief in the dogmas of the Church, particularly the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist.  One must have observed the minimum one hour Eucharistic fast.  Lastly, one must be in good standing with the Church - not under any sort of ban, censure, or excommunication.

His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI stated much the same -
Presenting oneself to receive Holy Communion should be a conscious decision, based on a reasoned judgment regarding one’s worthiness to do so, according to the Church’s objective criteria, asking such questions as: “Am I in full communion with the Catholic Church? Am I guilty of grave sin? Have I incurred a penalty (e.g., excommunication, interdict) that forbids me to receive Holy Communion? Have I prepared myself by fasting for at least an hour?” The practice of indiscriminately presenting oneself to receive Holy Communion, merely as a consequence of being present at Mass, is an abuse that must be corrected (Cardinal Ratzinger Memo to Cardinal McCarrick, # 1).

Dear brothers and sisters, I pray this reminder of the Teachings of Our Holy Mother Church will serve to increase the holiness of our Cathedral Parish and keep the Holy Sacrament Holy.

Please help and bless all those who through despair, through ignorance, through brainwashing by sinful godless people, through exposure to sin and death, have decided to call themselves atheists, or who are unsure and confused and agnostic, those such as the so called philosophers of the new atheism like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett and all who are indifferent or hostile towards God, help them to see the Reality which the vast majority of all humans who have ever lived have seen, and reveal unto them the Fullness and Revelation of that Reality which is Jesus Christ the Lord.

Lastly Lord, please help and save all those who follow demons, knowingly or unknowingly, so called satanists, occult religions, certain new age beliefs, certain pagan beliefs, and false gods and false idols, cults, scientologists, and all other false belief systems which contain either no truth at all, or the truth so twisted with lies it becomes unrecognizable, and bring them out of their devilish delusions, and have mercy on them through the Blood of Jesus Christ and His Passion.

Lord have mercy and hear our prayers.

Woodenly literal translation of Genesis creation account

Using my limited knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Septuagint Greek, and my decent understanding of English and Bible translations and the history thereof, plus technology afforded me by the endeavors of science, I have created a very woodenly literal concordant translation of Genesis 1.  I think you will find some things very interesting.... most specifically... Dinosaurs in the Bible!

1:1 In beginning He created, Elohim, the Heavens and the Earth.

2 And the earth, she became chaos, and vacancy and darkness was
over the surfaces of the abyss, and Spirit of Elohim vibrating over surfaces of the waters.

3 And He is saying, Elohim, he shall become Light,
and He is becoming Light.
4 And he is seeing, Elohim, the Light is good,
and he is separating, Elohim, between the Light and between the darkness.
5 And he is calling, Elohim, to the light Day, and to the darkness he calls night, and he is becoming evening, and he is becoming morning, age one.

6 And he is saying, Elohim, he shall become atmosphere in midst of the waters, and coming is a separation between waters to waters.
7 And he is making, Elohim, the atmosphere, and he is sparating between the water which is under the atmosphere and between the waters from on top the atmosphere, and he is becoming so.
8 And he is calling, Elohim, the atmosphere 'heavens.' And he is becoming evening and he is becoming morning, age two.

9 And he is saying, Elohim, they shall flow together, the waters under the heavens to one place, and she shall be seen, the dry land.  And he is becoming so.
10 And he is calling, Elohim, the dry land, and the confluence of the waters He calls seas. And seeing is the Elohim that it is good.
11 And he is saying, Elohim, she shall cause to vegetate the land - vegetation, herbage, sowing seed, trees of fruit making fruit of his species, which seed of him is in himself on the land; and he is becoming so.
12 And she is bringing forth the land; vegetation, herbage, sowing seed to species of him, and trees making fruit of his species, which seed of him is in himself, and seeing is the Elohim that it is good.
13 And he is becoming evening, and he is becoming morning, age three.

14 And God is saying, he shall become luminaries in the atmosphere of the heavens, to separate between the day and between the night, and they become for signs and for appointed seasons and for days and years.
15 And they become for lights in the atmosphere of the heavens to give light on the earth, and he is becoming so.
16 And making is the Elohim two of the luminaries the great ones, the great luminary to rule the day, and the lesser luminary to rule the night, and the stars.
17 And bestowing them is the Elohim in atmosphere of the heavens, to give light on the earth.
18 And to rule in the day and in the night, and to separate between the light and the darkness, and seeing is the Elohim that it good.
19 And he is becoming evening, and he is becoming morning, age four.

20 And he is saying, Elohim, Roam shall the waters with the roaming creature, living souls, and winged creatures shall fly over the earth, on the face of the atmosphere of the heavens. 
21 And creating is the Elohim great dinosaurs, great sea creatures, and every living moving soul, with which the water teems, after there species, and every winged flyer from its species.  And seeing is the Elohim that it was good.
22 And he is blessing them, Elohim, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the winged creatures multiply on the earth.
23 And he is becoming evening, and he is becoming morning, age five.

24 And God is saying, the earth - she shall bring forth the living soul from the species of her (the earth), large moving animals, all sorts of quadrepeds and beast of the land species of mother earth, and He is becoming so.
25 And making is the Elohim, the animal of the earth in their species, and the behemoth animals in their species, and every moving animal of the ground from its species.  And God is seeing that it was good.

26 And he is saying, Elohim, We shall make Humanity in the image of Us, as a likeness of Us: and they shall reign over the fish of the sea, and over the flyer of the heavens, and over the behemoth beasts, and over all land life, and over every moving animal moving on the land.
27 And He is creating, Elohim, the Human in His Own Image, in the Image of God he created him, male and female created he them.
28 And blessing them is the Elohim, and God is saying to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and subdue you her;  Reign over the fish of the sea, and over the flyer in the heavens, and over every animal, and over all the earth, all life moving on the land.

29 And saying is the Elohim,  Behold, I give to you all plants bearing seed, which is on the surface of the entire earth, and every tree which has in it the fruit of a tree bearing seed; for you he is becoming for food.
30 And for every animal of the earth, and for every flyer of the heavens, and for every creeping being on the land, which has in it a living soul, all green vegetation is for food; and he is becoming so.
31 And God is seeing all of which He made, and, behold, it is very good! And he is becoming evening and he is becoming morning, age six.

2:1 And they are being finished, the heavens and the earth and all of the masses of them.
2 And he is finishing, Elohim, in age seven the work of him which he had made;  and he is ceasing in the seventh age from all work of his which he had made.
3 And he is blessing, Elohim, the seventh age, and he is making it holy; because that in him he ceased from all work of him which he created, Elohim, to do of.

Shadows of the Three Days in the Tomb

"Christ was in the tomb three days and rose as written in the Scriptures"

Some may ask where in the Scriptures this is written?

Well... all over the Old Testament.

Behold:

It was on the third day that God first created life on earth (Gen 1:12)

It was on the third day of traveling that Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the spot where he was to offer his Only Begotten Son Isaac (Gen 22:4)

Joseph prophesied that on the third day Pharaoh would restore the servant to his place (Gen 40:13)

It was on the third day that Pharaoh's chief butler was restored to his butlership (Gen 40:20-21)

Josephs brothers would be imprisoned for three days before Joseph instructed them on how to live (Gen 42:17)

Moses asked the king of Egypt for the Israelites to go on a three day journey to make sacrifice to the Lord their God (Ex 3:18)

There was a darkness over all Egypt for three days time (Ex 10:22)

The Israelites traveled for three days with no water before Moses worked the miracle of water flowing from a rock (Ex 15:22)

For three days the Israelites purified themselves, and on the third day the LORD came down upon Mt Sinai (Ex 19:11)

The flesh of the sacrifice for the peace offering to the LORD had to be consumed fully by the third day (Lev 7:17)

The ark of the covenant traveled for three days with the Israelites (Num 10:33)

Any Israelite who had touched a dead body, was unclean unless he purified himself on the third day, and was made clean on the seventh day by virtue of purifying himself on the third day (Num 19:12)

The Israelites, after a journey, came into their cities on the third day (Jos 9:17)

Joshua gave the Israelites three days to prepare before crossing the Jordan to possess the land the Lord had inherited to them (Jos 1:11)

The Israelites hid in the mountain for three days to avoid their pursuers (Jos 2:16)

Samuel assured Saul that his asses which had been lost three days prior were alive and well (1 Sam 9:20)

David trusted that three days of being in Gods judgement was better than other punishments (1 Chr 21:12)

The Temple of God, after being destroyed, was raised up on the third day of Adar (Ezr 6:15)

Judith stayed in the camp for three days (Jud 12:7)

Judas Maccabeus and his army marched for three days through the wilderness (1 Mac 5:24)

After three days of mourning, fasting, and weeping, Judas commanded his army to stand ready (2 Mac 13:12)

On the third day Queen Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the kings palace (Est 5:1)

Hosea prophesied that on the third day we would be raised up and live in Gods sight (Hos 6:2)

Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights (Jon 1:17)

Musings on Genesis and modern science

I spent a few minutes this morning brainstorming one of my favorite subjects - Creation.

I put together a small paper outlining my thoughts on how the Genesis creation narrative and modern scientific findings can be comfortably aligned, and it is my firm belief that faith and science always compliment each other and never contradict.  If there appears to be a contradiction, it is because we are misinterpreting either the Sacred Scriptures and the beliefs our Faith is based on, or the findings of science in some way.

Here is what I threw together:



The Universe exploded into existence when the Big Bang event occurred, which science tells us happened about ~13.8 Ga.
Our Solar System / Sun formed about ~4.57 Ga.
The Earth formed about ~4.54 Ga
The Moon forms about ~4.53 Ga
Early life / single cell organisms appear to have origins going back about ~4 Ga
Early atmosphere evolves and the ozone layer develops (~2 – 1 Ga)
Multicellular complex life dates back to about ~1 Ga
Plant and animal life exploded into existence during the Cambrian explosion period, ~550 to 500 Ma
Y-Chromosomal Adam and Mitochondrial Eve (anatomically modern Homo sapiens) appeared ~150 ka
Modern human civilization sprung up in the Fertile Crescent around 7,000 B.C.

On the first creation day, day One, God created the heavens and the Earth, Light comes into existence and is deemed good, as well as darkness which is not deemed good or bad, it is simply a part of the Creation.  (The Universe and the Solar System and our Earth and Moon, 13.8, 4.57, 4.54, 4.53 Ga respectively)

Day two – the Earth is evolving, the atmosphere and seas (the firmament and waters above and below) are forming and they’re being prepared to spring forth Life (4.54 – ~3.8 Ga)

Day three – the Earth is continuing her journey and her mission to spring forth Life, the continents are forming and early multicellular life begins to appear on the Earth (~3.8 Ga – 550 Ma)

Day four – the Sun and the Moon and the Stars are now being seen by the multicellular organisms developing on earth, the atmosphere and ozone layer are becoming what they are today and Life becomes complex to the point where eyes develop that are able to sense the Sun, Moon and Stars through the earth’s atmosphere (~2 Ga – 490 Ma)

Day five – Life abounds in the waters and gradually spreads across the waters, the land and the air.  The Cambrian explosion occurs.  This is really when we can say Life began as we think of it, prior to this the “life” that existed was very alien to what we think of when we hear the word life.  (~575 Ga – 100 Ma).   

This fifth day is also the day God creates the “great sea creatures-monsters-whales-serpents-dragons”.  In the Hebrew of Genesis 1:21 it reads “Elohim ath e-thanniyn e-gadlowim”.  “Tanniyn, H8577, means dragons, serpents, land or sea beasts, etc.” and “gadowl, H1419, means mighty, great, loud, etc”.  These mighty, great and loud land sea serpents / beasts were called in Greek zoon herpeton, living reptiles, ketos megas, massive fish.  Gadowl tanniyn in Hebrew or megas zoon herpeton could easily be considered synonymous with deinos sauros, or dinosaur.  So when folks ask “where are dinosaurs in the Bible?”, or more specifically, where are dinosaurs in the creation account?  You can say “they are right there mentioned by God in the 21st verse of that 1st chapter of the 1st book of Sacred Scripture.”

Day 6 – Life continues to abound and become more complex, eventually springing forth all sorts of animals, which provide the basis for the physical body of Man, who evolves physically from the early Hominids to more advanced hominid species all the way down to the appearance of fully modern (anatomically speaking, not philosophically or theologically) Homo Sapiens with the appearance of Y-chromosomal Adam and Mitochondrial Eve coming on the scene simultaneously around ~150 ka (and there is much scientific debate about these, with a window of time anywhere between 200 ka at the earliest to 90 ka at the latest, but it’s safe to say they both appeared in the same period of time approximately 150 ka).

Later on during the sixth creation Day, Jesus creates Man in his own image, this Man being Adam who (I believe) was created around 7,000 B.C.  7,000 B.C. happens to be when civilization really began to boom in the region located around the Tigris and Euphrates in the center, and with the Tigris-Euphrates (Mesopotamia) being the epicenter, the Cradle of Life stretches from the heart (the Tigris-Euphrates) in the center, to the Nile in the West (which I believe is the Gihon), and the Indus in the East (which I believe is the Pison).

I think it’s quite the coincidence that modern archaeology has confirmed that civilization began in the area between the Nile and the Indus, and really flourished around the Tigris and Euphrates in the 8th millennium B.C.

Day 7 – God rested and continues to rest from 7,000 B.C. and the creation of Adam and Eve and civilization and religiously modern humans (homo religiosus) to today, the 31st day of January, Anno Domini 2016.

Day 8 – the 8th day is the Eternal Day, the Day we enter into upon either our bodily death, or the Day that comes when the Lord Jesus comes riding on the clouds with myriads upon myriads of His Holy Ones,
Amen.
